Double Sided Tape For Construction
Double sided tape is a “must-have” in the construction industry, with its applications spanning all phases and types of construction. Used for temporary bonding or permanent bonding, double sided tape can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, glass, plastic, and concrete, and it often replaces the need for glues, nails, screws, or fasteners.
While you might already be using double sided tape for certain construction projects or tasks, there could be additional ways to incorporate double sided tape to make your processes more efficient and effective.
Below are some of the most common uses and applications for double sided tape in construction.
Adhesion And Bonding
Bonding materials together is the most common use of double sided tape. Unlike other adhesives that require an average curing time of 24-72 hours for maximum bond, double sided tape sticks immediately. Heavy duty double sided tape is particularly effective for attaching floor and wall panels, ceiling tiles, and decorative elements (when the use of nails or screws might be impractical and/or unsightly).
Mounting And Installation
Double sided tape is extensively used for mounting and installation. The tape can be used to secure items (such as mirrors, trims, molding, and acoustic panels) directly to surfaces, without the need for drilling or hammering. When there’s a need for minimally invasive techniques (such as in a historic building or with modular construction), double sided tape is often the best solution.
Temporary Fixtures And Alignment
During construction, temporary fixtures or guides are often needed to facilitate accurate installations or alignments. Temporary-hold double sided tape can be used to temporarily secure elements, without leaving residue or damaging the underlying surface. Removable double sided tape is particularly useful for positioning templates and protective coverings, or even for holding light fixtures or panels in place until the permanent attachments are installed.
Sealing and Insulation
Double sided tape can help enhance energy efficiency in buildings. For example, double sided tape can be used to create tight seals between insulation boards before applying the vapor barrier, which can boost the thermal resistance of the building envelope.
Flooring
In flooring applications, double sided tape can be used to lay down carpets, underlayments, or even hardwood planks. The tape helps prevent the flooring material from shifting and can be used as a temporary or permanent bonding solution. The clean removal of temporary double sided tape makes it particularly useful for temporary setups at events or in leased spaces when alterations to the original structure aren’t allowed.
Facade Installation
In the construction of commercial buildings, double sided tape is often used for the installation of cladding elements and facade panels. Double sided tape can be used for permanent bonding (to avoid the use of visible screws or bolts) or for temporary holding (to hold panels in place until other fasteners can be applied).
Renovation And Retrofitting
During renovation projects, particularly in historical buildings, double sided tape can be invaluable. For example, in the restoration of a Victorian-era building, permanent double sided tape can be used to attach lightweight ornamental elements or moldings directly to the walls, which would eliminate the need to drill into fragile plaster.
HVAC And Electrical Installations
In the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing phases of construction, double sided tape can be used to route and secure wiring or to temporarily attach ductwork before final installation. For example, during the installation of a central heating system, double sided tape can be used to hold parts in place temporarily (ensuring precise alignments and measurements), before securing them permanently.
Interior Design
Double sided tape can be used for a range of commercial and residential interior design projects, from attaching LED lights and decorative elements to mounting decorative fabric panels. The tape can also be used to secure crown moldings and quarter rounds in place, eliminating the need for nails or other fasteners.
Temporary Protection
Throughout a construction project, protecting floors, fixtures, furniture, and other items is critical. Double sided tape can be used to temporarily attach protective plastic sheeting, drop cloths, or other materials to floors and walls.
